EDUT-305 Educational Psychology for Elementary Educators

This course examines a broad understanding of elementary students' development that informs teachers' classroom practices. Candidates study major theories and processes including constructivism, cognitivism, behaviorism, connectivism, humanism, and developmental theories related to elementary children. Candidates acquire knowledge of theory-based instructional strategies that are responsive to elementary students' differences, which promotes development and learning for all students. Additionally, candidates analyze characteristics of effective teachers and develop a philosophy of teaching. Prerequisite: EDUT-310

EDUT-310 Elementary Instructional Planning

This course includes knowledge of major concepts related to strategies for engaging elementary students in the learning process and strategies for promoting elementary students' independent thinking and learning. Candidates also develop an understanding of standards-based instructional planning based on best practices. Additionally, candidates develop a broad understanding of how a teacher's dispositions facilitate student achievement.

EDUT-311 Learning Processes of Secondary Students

This course will develop a broad understanding of learning processes and strategies to facilitate student engagement and achievement. The course includes knowledge of major theories and concepts related to the learning process and strategies for promoting students' independent thinking and learning.

EDUT-315 Educational Psychology for Secondary Teachers

This course examines a broad understanding of student development through the study of major concepts, theories, and processes related to the cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and moral development of adolescents. In addition, secondary education candidates study strategies to create instruction that is responsive to student differences and that promotes development in learning for all students. Prerequisite: EDUT-311

EDUT-320 Teaching Phonics for Elementary Educators

This course provides the content, strategies, and methods to implement phonics instruction using research in the field of reading, including the science of reading. The tools include strategies for teaching language development, phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling, and fluency. Candidates implement a data-driven, phonics-based lesson. Access to a lower elementary student required. Prerequisite: EDUT-310

EDUT-321 Teaching Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Writing for Elementary Educators

This course provides the content, strategies, and methods, to support comprehension, vocabulary, and writing instruction for elementary students. Candidates use the strategies and methods based on the science of reading to implement literacy-based instruction. Access to an elementary classroom setting required. Prerequisite: EDUT-310

EDUT-345 Assessment in the Elementary Classroom

The course emphasizes the use of formative assessments to guide learning and the use of summative assessments to certify learning. Candidates learn how to best implement assessments fairly, appropriately, and effectively for data collection, analysis, and data-driven decision making. Access to an elementary classroom setting required. Prerequisite: EDUT-310

EDUT-360 Building Literacy in Secondary Students

This course examines strategic literacy development for secondary learners. The course prepares teachers to develop independent metacognitive readers in their content area and includes exploration of scientifically based reading research strategies, theories, and processes. Prerequisites: EDUT-311

EDUT-361 Content Area Learning for Secondary Students

Candidates will examine approaches, methods, and strategies related to their content area. The course also emphasizes using academic standards, methods of planning and delivering instruction, and effectively assessing students' understanding and mastery of essential concepts and skills in their content area. Access to a secondary classroom or learning environment is required. Prerequisite: EDUT-311

EDUT-375 Assessment in Secondary Education

The course emphasizes the diagnostic nature of formative assessment and the appropriate use of summative assessment to improve teaching and learning. Candidates will learn how to implement assessments fairly, appropriately, and effectively for data collection, analysis, and data-driven decision making. Prerequisite: EDUT-311
