HMSR - Human Services

This course helps students to understand the differences between the various careers in the helping professions. Distinctions between social work, psychology, addictions counseling, life coaching, and human services are explained. Students will learn the specific ways each of the career paths in the helping professions helps to bring about positive change in the world.

This course provides interpersonal skill development with an emphasis on ethical behavior for students who are planning to work in social service organizations.

Understanding the biblical principles of caring for others, this class will focus on the evaluation and advocacy of services to meet the needs at the individual, family, and community levels. Prerequisites: HMSR-220 or equivalent and CRJ-268

This course will focus on the systems and the protocol that create social change for those who are un/under-served in society. Prerequisite: SOC-210

This class will focus on skills necessary for matching the needs of a community with available resources as well as the effectiveness of services rendered.

This class will focus on the leadership and management of human and fiduciary resources utilized in social service organizations. Prerequisite: HMSR-420

This is the final capstone course in the Bachelor of Science with a Major in Human Services. Students will complete a capstone project created to identify, plan, and prioritize career or academic goals. The projects will be based on acquired knowledge in either the Leadership specialization or Life Coaching specialization. Developing business plans, writing mission statements, networking with professionals, seeking supervision, integrating faith perspectives, and addressing ethical decision-making are just some of the topics examined in this capstone course. Prerequisites: Successful completion of all prior courses is required
