MEE-403 Machine Component Design

This course is an introduction to machine component design. Topics typically include deflection and spring rates, combinatory springs and equivalent stiffness calculations, deflection of beams, Euler column buckling and elastic instability, failure theories, safety factors and reliability, impact and fatigue, surface damage, detailed studies of major mechanical components such as springs, bearings, gears, shafts, etc. Design projects are normally required. Prerequisite: MEE-321.

MEE-405 Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

This course introduced students to the fundamentals of Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Topics include formulation of discrete elements for structural and stress analysis, variational theorems, iso-parametric elements, heat conduction, elastic stability, vibration, fluid flow, magnetics, and optimization problems solved using professional CAE software. Prerequisite: EGR-211.

MEE-410 Mechanical Vibration

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of mechanical vibrations. Topics typically include steady state and transient analysis of systems with single or multiple degrees of freedom, modal analysis and dynamic response of structures and machines, dynamics of continuous systems, Laplace transforms and stability. Prerequisites: MAT-255, MAT-265, and EGR-214.

MEE-460 Design of Thermal Systems

This course involves applications of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer to the design of thermal systems such as power plants, solar energy systems, and HVAC systems. The content also extends to complex cycles, heat exchangers, and radiation heat transfer. Includes individual and team design problems as a major component. Prerequisites: EGR-410 and EGR-390.

MEE-495 Independent Study and/or Research in Mechanical Engineering

Students will engage in a research project or an independent study in conjunction with a faculty member. Designed for engineering majors with a mechanical engineering concentration who either plan on graduate level work or have a special interest in certain areas of mechanical engineering. This course has a cap of 2 credit hours and cannot be repeated except in case of a 1+1 arrangement (1 credit hour in one semester and another credit hour in another semester). Prerequisite: Sophomore standing and permission of the instructor.
