EDUT-205 Educational Psychology for Elementary Educators

This course examines a broad understanding of elementary students' development that informs teachers' classroom practices. Candidates study major theories and processes related to the cognitive, social, including constructivism, cognitivism, behaviorism, connectivism, humanism, and developmental theories related to elementary children. Candidates acquire knowledge of theory-based instructional strategies that are responsive to elementary students' differences, which promotes development and learning for all students. Additionally, candidates analyze characteristics of effective teachers and develop a philosophy of teaching. Prerequisite: EDUT-210

EDUT-210 Elementary Instructional Planning

This course includes knowledge of major concepts related to strategies for engaging elementary students in the learning process and strategies for promoting elementary students' independent thinking and learning. Candidates also develop an understanding of standards-based instructional planning based on best practices. Additionally, candidates develop a broad understanding of how a teacher's dispositions facilitate student achievement.

EDUT-211 Learning Processes of Secondary Students

This course will develop a broad understanding of learning processes and strategies to facilitate student engagement and achievement. The course includes knowledge of major theories and concepts related to the learning process and strategies for promoting students' independent thinking and learning.

EDUT-215 Educational Psychology for Secondary Teachers

This course examines a broad understanding of student development through the study of major concepts, theories, and processes related to the cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and moral development of adolescents. In addition, secondary education candidates study strategies to create instruction that is responsive to student differences and that promotes development and learning for all students.

EDUT-245 Assessment in the Elementary Classroom

The course emphasizes the use of formative assessments to guide learning and the use of summative assessments to certify learning. Candidates learn how to best implement assessments fairly, appropriately, and effectively for data collection, analysis, and data-driven decision making. Access to an elementary classroom setting required. Prerequisite: EDUT-210

EDUT-275 Assessment in Secondary Education

The course emphasizes the diagnostic nature of formative assessment and the appropriate use of summative assessment to improve teaching and learning. Candidates will learn how to implement assessments fairly, appropriately, and effectively for data collection, analysis, and data-driven decision making. Prerequisite: EDUT-211

EDUT-320 Teaching Phonics for Elementary Educators

This course provides the content, strategies, and methods to implement phonics instruction using scientifically based reading research (SBRR). The tools include strategies for teaching language development, phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling, and fluency. Candidates implement a data-driven, phonics-based lesson. Access to a lower elementary student required. Prerequisite: EDUT-210

EDUT-321 Teaching Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Writing for Elementary Educators

This course provides the content, strategies, and methods to support comprehension, vocabulary, and writing instruction for elementary students. Candidates use the strategies and methods to implement literacy-based instruction. Access to an elementary classroom setting required. Prerequisite: EDUT-210

EDUT-360 Building Literacy in Secondary Students

This course examines strategic literacy development for secondary learners. The course prepares teachers to develop independent metacognitive readers in their content area, and includes exploration of scientifically based reading research strategies, theories, and processes. Prerequisite: EDUT-211

EDUT-361 Content Area Learning for Secondary Students

Candidates will examine approaches, methods, and strategies related to their content area. The course also emphasizes using academic standards, methods of planning and delivering instruction, and effectively assessing students' understanding and mastery of essential concepts and skills in their content area. Access to a secondary classroom or learning environment is required. Prerequisite: EDUT-211

This course involves research-based methodologies for managing the elementary classroom. Legal, procedural, behavioral, and physical environment expectations related to classroom management that impact student learning are explored. Access to an elementary classroom setting required. EDUT-450 Methods of Teaching for the Elementary Classroom

This course examines multiple, developmentally appropriate approaches and methods of teaching in elementary education. The candidates also examine cultural responsiveness, global awareness, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and differentiation in the context of the different teaching approaches and methods. Prerequisite: EDUT-210

This course examines various approaches to teaching and learning in secondary education. This course addresses differentiated instruction, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), project-based learning, cultural competency, and global competency. Prerequisite: EDUT-211

EDUT-480 Classroom Management for Secondary Teachers

This course emphasizes theories of learning and instruction and involves research-based methods for managing a secondary classroom. Legal and cultural expectations associated with classroom management that impact student learning and the learning environment are explored. EDUT-490 Capstone: Elementary Education

This course requires an active, practical application of candidates' developing classroom management and pedagogical skills. Access to elementary students is required. Prerequisites: EDUT-210, EDUT-205, EDUT-245, EDUT-320, EDUT-321, EDUT-450, EDUT-448

EDUT-470 Elementary Students with Diverse and Different Learning Needs

Candidates will examine characteristics of students with diverse and different learning needs, including the disabilities outlined in IDEA, and meeting their specific needs in the classroom. The course also emphasizes adaptations for creating a positive learning environment for students with diverse and different learning needs. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Successful completion of all courses in the Elementary Teacher Training Concentration.

EDUT-475 Literacy Assessment and Intervention for Elementary Educators

Candidates use the strategies, methods, and materials to implement literacy-based instruction. Also included in the course is an investigation of Response to Intervention (RTI) as it pertains to literacy instruction. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Successful completion of all courses in the Elementary Teacher Training Concentration.

This Internship focuses on the role and types of advocacy in early childhood, engaging in servant leadership practices, and exploring wrap-around support services for families with young children. Field Experience required.

The focus of this course is to overview the theoretical foundations of Early Childhood and to introduce the role of philosophies in decision-making processes. An emphasis on child development and Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) is accompanied by exploration of elements related to quality learning environment. Field Experience required.

In addition, secondary education candidates study strategies to create instruction that is responsive to student differences and that promotes development and learning for all students.

EDUT-520 Foundations in Phonics and Language Structure

This course provides the tools to implement phonics reading instruction using scientifically based reading research (SBRR). Topics include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and the structure of the English language. Instructional strategies for teaching each of these are modeled. Candidates will assess a single early elementary student or one who has been identified as reading below grade level and implement phoneme-based phonics instruction in a one-on-one setting. Field experience required.

This course provides practical classroom experiences in identifying challenges in literacy related to reading and writing. It covers techniques, methods, and materials involved with intervention. Included in the course is an investigation of Response to Intervention(RTI) as it pertains to reading and writing instruction. Field experience required.

EDUT-522 Foundations in Phonics and Language Structure for Early Childhood

This course provides a foundation for teaching reading to children in P - 3 classrooms. Using a reading framework of scientifically-based reading research (SBRR), candidates will learn how to assess and teach phonemic awareness, phonics, and related language skills in young children. Topics include phonemic awareness, print awareness, alphabetic principle, graphemes, phonics, and the structure and orthography of our language. Instructional strategies for teaching each domain are explained and modeled. Candidates will assess students' phonemic awareness and phonics skills. Supervised field experiences are required. Prerequisite: EDUT-524

EDUT-524 Parents, Families, and Community Partnerships

Examination of the historical evolution of the family, the role family involvement plays on child development, and the developmental of communication strategies provides a framework for building effective and reciprocal home-school relationships and partnerships. The role of teacher as advocate is explored. Field Experience required.

The course introduces the elementary teaching candidate to innovative teaching by integrating 21st Century skills in with the national, state, professional, and technology teaching standards. This course focuses on the implementation of reading and writing assessment in P-3 classrooms. Candidates will explore multiple informal and formal assessment methods and models across the content areas.
