ESL-English-a-Second-Language

ESL-105 English for Interpersonal Communication I

This course trains students to use English for everyday functions, situations, and tasks, including conversing with native English speakers. Fluency, accuracy, and idiomaticity are emphasized. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.

ESL-106 English for Interpersonal Communication II

This course trains students to successfully converse about social issues, specialized topics, and current events with native English speakers, by developing students' vocabulary knowledge and reading skills. Prerequisite: ESL-105 or equivalent.

ESL-110 English for Interpersonal Communication I

ESL-115 Academic English Listening and Speaking

This course trains students in the listening and speaking skills required to begin understanding and participating in introductory-level university classes, focusing on understanding main and key details and producing brief academic spoken English in presentations and interactions. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.

ESL-116 Academic English Listening and Speaking II

This course trains students in the listening and speaking skills required to successfully understand and participate in introductory-level university classes, focusing on understanding main ideas, details, and idiomatic language, as well as producing extended academic spoken English in presentations and interactions. Prerequisite: ESL-115 or equivalent.

ESL-120 Academic English Listening and Speaking

This course trains students in the listening and speaking skills required to begin understanding and participating in introductory-level university classes, focusing on understanding main and key details and producing brief academic spoken English in presentations and interactions. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. Students must earn an overall course grade of B- or higher to successfully complete this course; students with a lower grade must re-take this course.

ESL-125 Academic English Reading, Writing, and Grammar I

In this course, students practice academic reading and writing at an introductory level, focusing particularly on narrative and basic expository genres. In addition, grammar is taught with the goal of improving reading comprehension and writing ability. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.

ESL-126 Academic English, Writing, and Grammar II

In this course, students practice academic reading and writing at an introductory level, focusing particularly on common expository and argumentative genres. In addition, grammar is taught with the goal of improving reading comprehension and writing ability. Prerequisite: ESL-125 or equivalent.

ESL-130 Academic English Reading I

In this course, students practice academic reading at an intermediate level, focusing particularly on narrative and expository genres. Academic vocabulary and grammar are also taught with the goal of improving reading comprehension. Students must earn an overall course grade of B- or higher to successfully complete this course; students with a lower grade must re-take this course.

ESL-140 Academic English, Writing, and Grammar I

In this course, students practice academic reading and writing at an introductory level, focusing particularly on narrative and basic expository genres. In addition, grammar is taught with the goal of improving reading comprehension and writing ability. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. ESL-150 ESL Special Topics

This course provides the opportunity for students to explore specific content areas designed to enhance their cultural and linguistic transition to the Indiana Wesleyan University community. The course will focus on the integration of listening, speaking, reading, and writing about the chosen content for the semester in which it is offered. Such topics may include evangelical Christian culture, trending news, and culture via film. The topic will change each time this course is offered. Students are permitted to repeat this course up to 3 times.

Students must earn an overall course grade of B- or higher to successfully complete this course; students with a lower grade must re-take this course.

In this course, student practice academic reading at a high intermediate level, focusing particularly on expository genres. Academic and some specialized vocabulary and grammar are also taught with the goal of improving reading comprehension. Students must earn an overall course grade of B- or higher to successfully complete this course; students with a lower grade must re-take this course.

In this course, students practice academic reading and writing at an introductory level, focusing particularly on common expository and argumentative genres. In addition, grammar is taught with the goal of improving reading comprehension and writing ability. Prerequisite: ESL-140 or equivalent. Students must earn an overall course grade of B- or higher to successfully complete this course; students with a lower grade must re-take this course.
