PHO - Photography

A course designed to introduce students to the foundational principles of photography and visual literacy. This course will cover a wide survey of photographic capture and post-processing utilizing current photographic technology. Students will be capable of previsualizing and creating images that convey meaning. Prerequisite: ART-101.

An advanced studio-based course that will concentrate on portrait and professional lighting techniques. Students will gain experience with portable and studio lighting systems. Emphasis will be placed on preparing students to photograph for consumer and commercial applications within various conditions + locations. Prerequisite: PHO-110.

An introduction to the history of photography from 1839 to the present. This course will investigate the aesthetic, historical and technical progress of photography since it's inception in 1839. Students will be encouraged to establish a historical context with contemporary photographers. The photographic image will be explored as a viable artistic medium for presenting personal creative expression + vision.

This course will examine the traditional, technical and historical approach to documentary photography and apply these concepts to contemporary society. The photographer will create a body of work reflecting his/her interpretation of specific thematic explorations of that location or environment. An approach to this genre will be fostered through process, execution, lecture and historical comparison. Prerequisite: PHO-110.

A course that helps students to evaluate current achievements and project needs for the remainder of their undergraduate studies. Students will provide a current portfolio of their work and reflect on integration of faith and practice. Passing Photo Midpoint Review provides formal acceptance into the Photo program and entrance into all upper-level photo courses. Prerequisite: PHO-110.

A course that will build on the skills and concepts of Photo I. The emphasis of the course is comprehension of still and motion digital capture and manipulation and an expanded understanding and ability to read images. The primary focus being the photographic language and will cover a range of shooting assignments: harnessing available light, narrative and composition, manipulation of imagery, and challenging conceptual ideas of how images can function. Prerequisite: PHO-110.

A course that covers the foundational concepts of time-based media, specifically film and cinema. The emphasis of the course is comprehension of motion digital capture and assembly/manipulation with an expanded understanding and ability to utilize narrative structure to tell story. Prerequisite: ART-245.

A photographic course with emphasis placed upon explorations of photographic vision, technical concerns, aesthetic aspects of photography, and other chemical based processes. Specific techniques covered in a given semester will vary. Prerequisite: PHO-261.

A course that will build on the skills and concepts of Motion I and covers the theoretical concepts of time-based media, specifically film and cinema. The emphasis of the course builds toward a mastery of motion digital capture and assembly/manipulation with heavy value placed on and ability to utilize narrative structure to tell story. Students will create portfolio-level motion work. Prerequisite: PHO-360.

A seminar course that will examine contemporary issues and movements within photography. Specific course content will vary by semester and student interest. Students are expected to read and write on photographic critical theory and evaluate specific topics within the current discourse. Prerequisite: ART-286.

This course will introduce students to conceptual assignments, contemporary issues and key debates about critical theory in photography. Emphasis will be placed on preparing students and their portfolios for entrance into graduate photography programs and expand personal vision. Prerequisite: PHO-370.

Course covers the development of a photographic small business venture including startup, growth, and management. Topics will include, business structures, taxes, marketing, and industrystandard practices such as estimating and invoicing, day rates, and preproduction. Students will also focus on personal branding and print/ digital marketing. Prerequisite: PHO-110.

PHO-490 is the photo program capstone course. As such, the course exists not merely to provide an opportunity for students to showcase their current portfolio of work, but to expect students to be more intentional and theoretically engaged when developing the stylistic and formal concepts of their final project. Prerequisite: PHO-290. May be repeated up to 6 credits.
