This course examines a broad understanding of elementary students' development that informs teachers' classroom practices. Candidates study major theories and processes including constructivism, cognitivism, behaviorism, connectivism, humanism, and developmental theories related to elementary children. This course provides the content, strategies, and methods, to support comprehension, vocabulary, and writing instruction for elementary students. Candidates use the strategies and methods based on the science of reading to implement literacy-based instruction. Access to an elementary classroom setting required. Prerequisite: EDUT-310

The course emphasizes the use of formative assessments to guide learning and the use of summative assessments to certify learning. Candidates learn how to best implement assessments fairly, appropriately, and effectively for data collection, analysis, and data-driven decision making. Designing Education reimagines adolescent education by exploring the intersection of adolescent development, diversity, and innovative teaching. This course empowers candidates to address cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, physical, and moral growth while navigating diversity, exceptionalities, and second-language acquisition. Candidates will learn to craft inclusive, student-centered, and differentiated learning experiences, integrating project-based methodologies and evidence-based practices. The focus of this course is to overview the theoretical foundations of Early Childhood and to introduce the role of philosophies in decision-making processes. An emphasis on child development and Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) is accompanied by exploration of elements related to quality learning environment. Field Experience required. This course provides a foundation for teaching reading to children in P - 3 classrooms. Using a reading framework of scientifically-based reading research (SBRR), candidates will learn how to assess and teach phonemic awareness, phonics, and related language skills in young children. Topics include phonemic awareness, print awareness, alphabetic principle, graphemes, phonics, and the structure and orthography of our language.
