AS - Professional Pilot

The Associate of Science with a major in Professional Pilot degree readies graduates for careers as professional aviation pilots or flight instructors. The program prepares students to earn the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Commercial Pilot Certificate, with Single-Engine Land class rating. In addition, graduates will attain an Instrument Rating.

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

• Apply leadership principles related to safely operating an aircraft in various commercial operations.
• Demonstrate risk management, decision-making, aeronautical knowledge, and piloting skills to the Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for a Commercial Pilot as described by the Federal Aviation Administration.
• Demonstrate risk management, decision-making, aeronautical knowledge, and piloting skills to the Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for an instrument-rated pilot as described by the Federal Aviation Administration.
• Integrate a biblical framework that guides business and personal interactions. 

The curriculum will be completed in the order established by Indiana Wesleyan University. Indiana Wesleyan University reserves the right to modify the curriculum as necessary.

Admission Requirements

The admission requirements for the associate degree programs offered through the College of Adult and Professional Studies are as follows:

• Proof of standard high school diploma, GED certification, or current high school transcript for approval by the Aviation Program Director.
• Submission of all required items for the admissions process as outlined in the "application procedures" section of the application packet.
• All prospective students must be interviewed and approved by the program director or designee. 
• Students must agree to and sign the university’s Aviation Program Waiver of Liability Document.
• Students must agree to understand and follow the most current version of the university’s Aviation Pilot Student Handbook.

In addition, the following Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements will apply:

• Be at least 17 years of age for the Private Pilot Certificate.
• Be at least 18 years of age for the Commercial Pilot Certificate.
• Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language*.
• Complete verification requirements as required by the Transportation Safety Association (TSA), including presenting either of the following: original Passport or original birth-certificate and government-issued photo identification.
• Hold either a First-Class or Second-Class FAA Medical Certificate.

*The “speak” can be satisfied in the interview by the program director, and for international students, the “read” and “write” can be satisfied by a minimum TOEFL score of 79.

Transfer/Assessed Credit Policy

Transfer credit for degree requirements for undergraduate programs within the College of Adult and Professional Studies may be granted as follows:

• Credit must have been earned at a college or university that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) with a minimum grade of "C".
• Courses must be approved by the DeVoe School of Business, Technology, & Leadership.
• Associate programs offered through the College of Adult and Professional Studies require a minimum of 15 credit hours of courses in the academic major to be taken at Indiana Wesleyan University.
• Credit documented on a JST or CCAF transcript for training received in any MOS, NEC system, AFSC, and Coast Guard Ratings.

Assessed credit for degree requirements may be granted through IWU’s assessment of prior learning process for the following:

• Corresponding coursework documented on a transcript/certification from a recognized national, state, county, or municipal training council or academy.
• Documentation of FAA Certificates and Ratings.

Additional Requirement for This Program

• Students should purchase various piloting devices to perform the functions of a pilot such as a flight computer, current aeronautical charts, headset, etc.
• Students who need more flight training time beyond the budget for each course must add funds to their account to continue their training.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate with an associate degree with a major in Professional Pilot from the College of Adult and Professional Studies at Indiana Wesleyan University, the following requirements must be met:

• Completion of 60 semester hours.
• Completion of foundational requirements, specified general education requirements and major requirements.
• Students must maintain a “B” grade in all AVP courses. Failure to maintain the appropriate academic progress may result in suspension from the program.
• Cumulative GPA of 2.25 or higher.
• Completion of 24 hours of general education requirements as specified (General Education Requirements).
• Payment of all tuition and fees is required to receive a diploma.
• FAA Commercial Certificate with Single or Multi-Engine Land Class Rating.
• FAA Instrument Rating.
