Chapel Credit Reduction for Consecutive Absences
We realize that unforeseeable circumstances may arise in the lives of students over the course of a semester at IWU. Short-term absences do not qualify for a reduction in spiritual formation credits. Students are responsible to accrue the minimum credits in a semester and it is recommended that students build in a cushion in case a short-term absence is needed.
When unforeseen circumstances occur, resulting in an extended absence, the Spiritual Formation Office will use the following guide when granting a reduction in Spiritual Formation Credits to a student:
- If the student’s excused absence is five consecutive class days or less, then there is no chapel reduction.
- If the student’s excused absence is six consecutive class days or more, then the SFO must have documentation of the excused absence from:
- Academic Affairs and/or
- Center for Student Success
- A student must request the reduction before or during the absence period. Reductions will not be granted retroactively.
- With proper documentation for the excused absence, the SFO will offer ONE chapel reduction for every THREE chapels missed or to be missed. That is, 3 chapels missed (with documentation) = 1 Credit Reduction
- Documentation must come from CSS or Academic Affairs and must include the dates of the absence.
Possible reasons for a chapel credit reduction with documentation of excused absences from classes are: mental health, mono, concussion, extended illness, hospitalization, surgery, injury, crisis of a dependent, etc.
Please note: SFO confirms excused absences with Academic Affairs, the Center for Student Success and Aviso.
Please contact the Spiritual Formation Office at chapel@indwes.edu for instructions to apply for a possible reduction in credits for long-term absences only.
