Attendance Accountability
Attendance accountability follows a pathway similar to that of IWU’s conduct accountability:

Violation – Student status after the first
failure to accrue credits in a given semester.
Violation serves as a warning that a student is in jeopardy of Probation in a future semester. A student must accrue all Spiritual Formation Credits while on
Violation to move to “Good Standing.”

Probation – Student status after the
second failure to accrue credits. (does not need to be consecutive semesters)
Probation serves as a notice that a student is in jeopardy of suspension and includes limited co-curricular and leadership involvement.

Suspension – Student status after three
semesters of failing to accrue credits (does not need to be consecutive) which results in suspension from the university.

Violation
A student spends a semester on Violation status after their first failure to accrue credits in a given semester. Violation serves as a warning that a student is in jeopardy of Probation in a future semester.
The student will have a violation placed on their student account and will be notified via email at the end of the semester. A student must accrue all Spiritual Formation Credits the following semester (while on Violation) to move to “Good Standing.” A failure to do so will mean a change to “Probation” status.
Students on Violation will be given the opportunity to fill out an online Spiritual Formation Plan by the drop/add date that helps them develop a strategy for accruing credit and also earns them one Spiritual Formation Credit toward their upcoming semester total.
Probation
A student with a Violation from any previous semester spends a semester on Probation after their second failure to accrue credits. Probation serves as a notice that a student is in jeopardy of Suspension and includes limited co-curricular and leadership involvement.
The student will have a probationary status placed on their student account and will be notified via email. While on “Probation” a student must accrue all credits and attend a “Probation Workshop” to move to “Good Standing.” A failure to do so will mean suspension from Indiana Wesleyan University.
Students on Probation will have limited co-curricular involvement and must step away from leadership positions for the semester they are on probation. A permanent record is kept in the
student’s account and attendance information is available for advisors, coaches, music directors, etc. Probation students will also receive an additional layer of engagement from the Spiritual Formation Office, their advisor, their coach, and any other co-curricular support systems.
Suspension
A student with a probationary status from any previous semester will be suspended from the university following their third failure to accrue credits. They will be notified via email and un-enrolled from classes.
Undergraduate students suspended for a failure to accrue Spiritual Formation Credits can reapply through the Admissions Office after one semester away. Readmission is not guaranteed; however, the Spiritual Engagement Committee will review all applications. Students must complete the following to be considered for readmission:
- Submit a letter stating intention to abide by IWU values and expectations regarding spiritual engagement attendance and participation.
- Fulfill all other readmission requirements.
Students who wish to appeal their Suspension must complete the online Spiritual Formation Office’s Suspension Appeal Form. Students who are suspended will be given instructions for the appeals process. A committee will review requests submitted by the deadline. In order to appeal a Suspension, students must meet two of the three following criteria:
- They have attended the Probation Workshop and completed the Spiritual Formation Plan during their semester on Probation status.
- The student has new information that the Spiritual Life Suspension Committee does not already have that should be considered, such as: circumstances outside of the student’s control throughout the semester or a bias incident against them.
- The student has already fulfilled at least 85% of their Spiritual Formation Credit Requirement for the semester.
*NOTE: A student who flagrantly violates the Spiritual Formation Attendance Policy with less than half the number of required credits may be placed on probation without receiving a chapel violation. (“Flagrantly” is defined here not only in terms of total credits, but also as a failure to respond to requests to address attendance issues.)
