AS - Public Service and Management

The Associate of Science degree with a major in Public Service and Management graduate will be prepared to lead people and manage organizations in a wide variety of career fields - from corporate settings to public service. Anchored in the liberal arts students will examine fundamental elements of management, public service, leadership, and communications. 

  • First Responder Track - Students will capitalize on the courses and experience of assessed credit from a law enforcement or fire academy, first responder, or a recognized national, state, county, or municipal training council academy transcript/certification.
  • Military Track - Students will capitalize on the courses and experience of transfer credit from Military Occupation Specialties (MOS), Naval Ratings and the Navy Enlisted Classification System (NEC) system, Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSC) on a Joint Services Transcript (JST), Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) transcript, or Coast Guard Ratings.

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to: 

  • Analyze issues, ideas, artifacts, and events before accepting or formulating an opinion or conclusion. 
  • Write clearly and effectively using language that is context and audience appropriate. 
  • Apply humanistic and artistic knowledge to analyze creative thought and forms of expression. 
  • Integrate a biblical framework into plans for personal and professional character development.
  • Solve quantitative problems from a variety of authentic contexts presented in a variety of formats. 
  • Apply personnel management skills to business challenges. 
  • Analyze the impact of globalization on economics, politics, and national security. 
  • Describe the value of public service to the broader community.

Admission Requirements

The admission requirements for this associate degree program are as follows:

Military Track

  • Available only to qualified military students.
  • Original transcripts from all previous college or university study at a college or university that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • Prior completion of at least 6 transferable credit hours as listed on a JST or CCAF transcript for training received in any Military Occupation Specialty (MOS), Naval ratings and designators used along with the Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) system, Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSC), and Coast Guard Ratings. 

First Responder Track

  • Available only to qualified First Responder students. 
  • Original transcripts from all previous college or university study at a college or university that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). 
  • Prior completion of at least 6 credit hours granted for a law enforcement, fire academy, first responder, or emergency medical personnel either through IWU’s prior learning assessment or as evidenced on an official transcript from a college or university that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Transfer/Assessed Credit Policy

Transfer credit for degree requirements for undergraduate programs within the College of Adult and Professional Studies may be granted as follows:

  • Credit documented on a transcript awarded by a college or university that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) with a minimum grade of "C".
  • Credit documented on a JST or CCAF transcript for training received in any MOS, NEC system, AFSC, and Coast Guard Ratings.

Assessed credit for degree requirements may be granted through IWU’s assessment of prior learning process for the following:

  • Coursework documented on a transcript/certification from a law enforcement or fire academy, first responder, or a recognized national, state, county, or municipal training council or academy.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate with an associate degree the following requirements must be met:

  • Completion of 60 hours.
  • Completion of foundational, major and general education requirements as outlined in the program of study.
  • Completion of 24 hours of general education requirements as specified (General Education Requirements).
  • Completion of 27 hours in the major with a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • To meet the residency requirement, 15 semester hours must be completed at IWU.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Payment of all tuition and fees is required to receive a diploma.
