MEd - Teacher Leadership Major - Elementary Education Specialization

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) program with a major in Teacher Leadership is designed to provide an advanced degree in teacher leadership to teachers who were awarded an Indiana Wesleyan's Transition to Teaching Elementary Certificate within ten years and became practicing classroom teachers. Candidates will complete a 33-credit hour program by adding 18 hours of advanced preparation courses to 15 hours that may be transferred in from the TTT Elementary program coursework. These additional hours feature courses that are aligned to the National Education Association's Teacher Leader Model standards, and promote constructivist approaches to teaching and learning, emphasizing teacher leadership and teacher efficacy. The program is designed to support teacher leadership as a vehicle for transforming educators to meet the needs of their learners.

This program is open to any candidate who was awarded Indiana Wesleyan's Transition to Teaching Elementary Certificate within ten years and received an Elementary or P-12 initial teaching license in Indiana. In order to enter the degree program, candidates must have at least one year of successful teaching experience; this may preclude some TTT Elementary completers from entering this degree program immediately. This program does not lead to additional subject area licensure in Indiana. Prior to applying, an applicant is responsible for knowing whether or not this program will satisfy regulatory requirements for the state in which he or she may be seeking advanced standing.

Upon completion of TTTE program, candidates should be able to:

  • Demonstrate professional, moral, and ethical behaviors and articulate related Christ-like principles.
  • Demonstrate competence in the following School of Educational Leadership's dispositional domains: Communication, Critical Thinking, Human Interaction, Teacher Leadership, and Professionalism.
  • Apply content/subject matter and assessment knowledge to teaching and learning experiences using a variety of pedagogical methods and technologies at the elementary level.
  • Demonstrate research-based knowledge of how and when elementary children learn, addressing developmental, motivational stages, and factors that affect learning for students with exceptionalities, diverse backgrounds, language differences, and learning differences.
  • Create and implement differentiated assessments of student learning at the elementary level that information instruction.
  • Design and implement a variety of instructional strategies that consider the varied needs of all elementary children.
  • Create a safe and culturally responsive learning environment using research-based classroom management strategies and high standards for all elementary children.
  • Collaborate professionally and effectively with elementary children, colleagues, administrators, primary care provider(s), and community in written and oral forms.

Upon completion of the MEd core courses, candidates should be able to:

  • Use effective communication skills and knowledge of diversity to work collaboratively.
  • Collect, analyze, and communicate school/classroom data and current research to improve student learning and assist their colleagues in this process.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to plan sustainable professional development that meets diverse learning needs and aligns with school/ district goals.
  • Analyze data from multiple sources to identify curriculum/instruction needs and serve as a team leader/mentor to foster professional growth to meet these needs and improve student learning.
  • Work with colleagues to identify and use assessment tools and collect data to promote change for school/district improvement.
  • Use understanding of diversity, effective technology, and communication skills to collaborative with family and community stakeholders for improved educational experiences and student achievement.
  • Collaborate with families, communities, and colleagues to advocate for effective educational approaches.
  • Demonstrate the professional dispositions of a teacher leader.

Admission Requirements

The admission requirements for the M.Ed. program with a major in Teacher Leadership are as follows:

  • Successful awarding of the Indiana Wesleyan TTT Elementary Certificate within ten years.
  • Public school candidates need:
    • A valid (but not necessarily current) state teacher’s license.
    • At least one year (i.e., a minimum of one semester and one day) of teaching experience from an approved and accredited public, private, or parochial P-12 school in the United States or abroad.
    • Supporting documentation demonstrating access to a P-12 classroom.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate, from the M.Ed. program, candidates must:

  • Successfully complete the remaining 18 hours of the M.Ed. curriculum.
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above in all graduate work and a minimum grade of "B-" in each course.
  • Successful completion of admission, mid-program review, and program completion gateways.
  • Payment of all tuition and fees is required to receive a diploma.
