Admission

First-year Admission

Interested students are encouraged to apply for admission at the close of their junior year in high school. Applications are accepted throughout the senior year of high school, but should be submitted before December 1 for priority consideration. The application fee will be waived for any applications received before December 1. Applications after December 1 will be considered as space is available. The completed application, high school transcript, and test scores (SAT and subscores or ACT) are necessary for an admission decision. In some cases, an essay and recommendation are required. A tuition deposit is required before registration and is fully refundable until May 1.

An admission decision may be made before the end of the student's high school career if an official high school transcript has been provided. In this event a full four-year record and certification of graduation will be required before the student begins classes at IWU.

Viable candidates for admission should have a minimum of each of the following: 8 credits in language arts (equivalent to 4 years); 6-8 credits in mathematics (equivalent to 3-4 years); 6 credits in science (equivalent to 3 years); 6 credits in social studies (equivalent to 3 years); 4 credits in foreign language (equivalent to 2 years); 2 credits in health, physical education, safety (equivalent to 1 year); and 4-6 credits from other courses offered (equivalent to 2-3 years). Regular admission requires that applicants have at least a 2.6 cumulative high school GPA on a 4.0 scale and a 960 SAT (Math and Evidence Based Reading and Writing) or 18 ACT score. Applicants who do not meet the requirements for regular admission may request special consideration. Regular admission for Fall 2019 requires that applicants have at least a 2.6 cumulative high school GPA on a 4.0 scale and a 990 SAT (Math and Evidence Based Reading and Writing) or 19 ACT score. Applicants who do not meet the requirements for regular admission may request special consideration.

Applicants may make arrangements at their local high school counseling office to take the SAT or ACT in the junior year or as early as possible in the senior year. Applicants who are unable to present SAT or ACT scores can make special arrangements with The Center for Student Success at the IWU-Marion campus to be tested for institutional ACT.

Individuals not receiving a high school diploma must take either the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) or the General Education Development Exam (GED) and achieve satisfactory scores to be considered for admission.

Transfer Student Admission

A transfer student is defined as a student who has attempted 12 or more college credit hours post-high school graduation. Transcripts of all college work must be submitted with other admission credentials at the time of application to the Indiana Wesleyan University Admissions Office. All transcripts must be sent directly from the office of the registrar at the college or university attended. Prior to orientation, students are also required to have a form (Transfer Information Form) completed from the last institution attended verifying that the student left the college in good academic and social standing. All undergraduate students must complete their last 30 credit hours before graduation at IWU.

Transition Student Admission

A transition student is defined as a student who begins his/her education through IWU-National & Global and transitions to IWU-Marion to continue his/her degree. Transition students must fulfill all admission requirements required of transfer applicants. IWU-National & Global will provide IWU-Marion Undergraduate Admissions with transcripts from any institution attended prior to enrollment with IWU-National & Global. If a student has attended an institution since departing IWU-Nation & Global, the student must submit an official college transcript from any/all institutions attended since leaving IWU-National & Global and have the Transfer Information Form completed by the last institution attended. If the last institution attended is IWU-National & Global, the Transfer Information Form is not required. Students are not required to submit an IWU transcript for consideration of admission as this coursework is accessible to the IWU-Marion Transfer Team.

International Student Admission

Indiana Wesleyan University is authorized under federal law to enroll nonimmigrant alien students. It is recommended that interested students contact the Admissions Office as early as possible (preferably one year in advance) as there are usually delays in preparing visas, passports, and transcripts. All application forms, documents, test scores, and payments must be received by July 1 of the year of intended study.

Students who do not speak English as their first and primary language must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) prior to admission to the University*.

Admission scores follow:

• TOEFL score of 57 to 67 - admission requires enrollment in two semesters of ESL
• TOEFL score of 68 to 78 - admission requires enrollment in one semester of ESL
• TOEFL score of 79 - admission without ESL requirement
• IELTS score of less than 6.5 - admission reflective of subscores requires enrollment in one or two semesters of ESL
• IELTS score of 6.5 for undergraduate and 7.0 for graduate programs - admission without ESL requirement

*Waiver Qualifications:

• Attended the last four full years at a U.S. high school.
• Attended the last four full years in an international educational institution where English is the principal language of instruction; institution may be required to provide verification.
• Earned an SAT Reading Test subscore of at least a 27.
• Earned ACT English and reading scores of at least 20.
• Earned a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited U.S. institution.

College transcripts for schools outside the United States should be evaluated by a credential evaluation service like ECE (www.ece.org), WES (www.wes.org), or one that is approved by NACES (www.naces.org/members.html).

Before the immigration form I-20 can be sent, students from all countries except Canada must send the University money the equivalent to the first semester’s tuition, room, and board. Students from all countries including Canada must send to the University (a) a letter of financial commitment with certified bank statements indicating sufficient funds for attendance; and (b) proof of health insurance coverage in the U.S. or approximately $1200 for one year of insurance premium (must be renewed annually).

Re-enrollment

CAS and SON Pre-licensure Nursing

An undergraduate student who has previously been enrolled at IWU-Marion and has ended enrollment for any length of time, without an approved leave of absence, must re-apply. Application for re-enrollment must be made through the Admissions Office. Re-admitted students who are not enrolled for one academic year or longer must meet the requirements of the governing academic catalog for the re-enrollment date. Any student who attended other institutions of higher learning must submit official transcripts of all work completed and a Transfer Information Form (to be completed by the last college or university attended) before a re-admission decision can be made. All transcripts must be sent directly from the office of the registrar at the college or university attended.

Graduate Programs

A graduate student in CAS who has not been enrolled for more than two semesters must re-apply through the Admissions Office. Any student who attended other institutions of higher learning must submit a Transfer Information Form completed by the last college attended and official transcripts of all work completed before a re-admission decision can be made. All transcripts must be sent directly from the office of the registrar at the college or university attended.

Wildcat Academy/Early College Enrollment (High School Students/Dual Credit)

Qualified high school students are offered the opportunity to enroll in onsite courses taught on the residential campus under the Wildcat Academy/Early College Enrollment program. A student must have maintained a 3.0 average GPA on a 4.0 scale in high school classes and be recommended by a high school counselor or principal to qualify. A qualified student may begin taking one 100-level course in the fall semester of his/her junior year, and up to 6 credit hours of 100-level courses per semester throughout the duration of his/her high school career. A student may take up to 16 credit hours through this program. To maintain satisfactory academic progress and continue in the Wildcat Academy/Early College Enrollment program, students must earn a grade of C or higher for each course completed. The cost includes an application fee and a cost per credit hour.

Unclassified Student Admission

A student who is not pursuing a university degree and wants to take individual courses for personal development may be admitted as an unclassified student. A maximum of 6 credit hours per semester and a total of 18 credit hours may be completed with this status. This does not constitute admission to a university program and the University does not maintain degree audits for this classification. Unclassified students who subsequently wish to pursue a degree program must apply for regular admission status and at that time will receive a degree audit of the chosen major. Information on degree programs is available in the Registration and Academic Services office.

Guest students from other colleges should have the approval of their home institution. By special arrangement, high school students may register with unclassified status while meeting requirements for high school graduation.

Professional Programs (Acceptance into Majors)

Acceptance into the freshman class with a major in athletic training, teacher education, nursing, social work, Christian/youth ministries, or other programs does not necessarily imply admission to these professional programs. Departments may have specific requirements that must be met at different levels of the program. A student will be assigned a status of "pre-" added to the major until these specific requirements are met.
