CIE-410 Geotechnical Engineering

This course introduces students to the study of mechanics of aggregations applied to earthwork and foundations design. Soil mechanics is applied to the analysis, design, and construction of foundations, slopes, retaining systems, embankments, roadways, tunnels, levees, wharves, landfills, and other systems that are made of or supported by soil. Other topics covered include the fundamentals of soil origin, composition, structure, and properties, and introductions to soil identification, classification, permeability, strength, and compressibility. Hands-on labs included. Prerequisite: EGR-211.

4

CIE-430 Structural Steel Design

This course introduces students to the design of structural steel beams, columns, tension members, frames, trusses, and connections (bolted and welded) using the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) method. Special emphasis is placed on AISC specifications and manuals, and design software applications. Practical design project is normally included. Prerequisite: CIE-220.

3

CIE-450 Urban Hydrology

This course studies water supply and sewer systems, reservoirs, wells, water transmission and distribution, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, flooding and flood control. Other topics of interest include the study of hydraulics and hydrology for urban/suburban watersheds and the design of culverts, street drainage, storm drain inlets and storm drains. Prerequisite: EGR-410.

2

CIE-495 Independent Study and/or Research in Civil Engineering

Students will engage in a research project or an independent study in conjunction with a faculty member. Designed for engineering majors with a civil engineering concentration who either plan on graduate level work or has a special interest in certain area of civil engineering.
