ART-101 Ideation/Interpretation 1

An introductory studio course designed to immerse students in iterative design processes in order to understand the elements and principles of design. Design solutions will be produced both collaboratively and individually.

ART-103 Art Experience and Appreciation

An introductory study of art appreciation. The course covers art-related vocabulary, focused observation, historical context, and the elements and principles of design as an entry into discussion surrounding the meaning and purpose of visual imagery. Concepts emerge from the content areas of aesthetics, art history, and critical inquiry.

ART-111 OBS/REP 1: Empirical Drawing

An introductory studio course for artists and designers centered on drawing from direct observation using traditional perceptual measuring tools and simple materials.

ART-120 OBS/REP 2: Empirical Drawing

An intermediate studio course centered on drawing complex subjects such as the figure and interior space from direct observation using traditional perceptual measuring tools. Prerequisite: ART-111.

ART-121 Drawing I

This course presents the basic elements of observational drawing: composites and structure, use of line, movement and space. Gain an awareness and confidence to create on paper what your eye sees. For declared majors within the Division of Art.

ART-131 Ideation/Interpretation 2

A studio-based course designed to immerse students in creative thinking through a diverse array of methods and materials. The Elements and Principles of Design will be applied to human-centered problems, and design solutions will be produced both collaboratively and individually. Prerequisites: ART-101 and ART-111.

ART-133 Color

Color Theory emphasizes an understanding of the physical, emotional and psychological aspects of color. How color is used in visual communication and media is also studied. Color as a visual language is explored through conceptual, practical and problem solving methods. Prerequisites: ART-101.

ART-170 Art Appreciation

A study of the history of art in Western culture from ancient times to the present. Not open to individuals with credit in MUS-180. (For students who need to complete Humanities Core requirements and have already completed the music portion of MUS-180. Meets either the first or second half of the semester.)
