2022-2023 Catalog

CIE - Civil Engineering

CIE-210 Geomatics Engineering

This course introduces students to field measurements of distance, elevation, and angles using various instruments including tape, automatic level, and total station. It also includes drawing and utilizing contour plots as well as calculating volumes for earthwork. Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of the mathematics preparatory requirement.

3

CIE-220 Structural Analysis

This course covers shear and moment diagrams as well as influence lines. It also includes analysis of statically determinate and indeterminate trusses and frames, virtual work, moment distribution, and matrix methods. Prerequisite: EGR-211.

3

CIE-310 Transportation Engineering

This course introduces students to the study of primary modes of transportation. Main emphasis is on planning, design, and operation of roadways, including traffic flow theory, highway capacity, traffic control, geometry, drainage, and design of pavements. Prerequisite or corequisite: CIE-210.

3

CIE-330 Reinforced Concrete Design

This course introduces students to strength analysis and design of reinforced concrete members as well as their relationship to current code provisions. Prerequisite: CIE-220.

3

CIE-396 Special Topics in Civil Engineering

A course in topics of current interest in civil engineering. Specific content varies term by term but will be announced before registration begins for the semester of offering. Prerequisite: Permission of the division chair.

1 to 3

CIE-410 Geotechnical Engineering

This course introduces students to the study of mechanics of aggregations applied to earthwork and foundations design. Soil mechanics is applied to the analysis, design, and construction of foundations, slopes, retaining systems, embankments, roadways, tunnels, levees, wharves, landfills, and other systems that are made of or supported by soil. Other topics covered include the fundamentals of soil origin, composition, structure, and properties, and introductions to soil identification, classification, permeability, strength, and compressibility. Hands-on labs included. Prerequisite: EGR-211.

4

CIE-430 Structural Steel Design

This course introduces students to the design of structural steel beams, columns, tension members, frames, trusses, and connections (bolted and welded) using the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) method. Special emphasis is placed on AISC specifications and manuals, and design software applications. Practical design project is normally included. Prerequisite: CIE-220.

3

CIE-450 Urban Hydrology

This course studies water supply and sewer systems, reservoirs, wells, water transmission and distribution, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, flooding and flood control. Other topics of interest include the study of hydraulics and hydrology for urban/suburban watersheds and the design of culverts, street drainage, storm drain inlets and storm drains. Prerequisite: EGR-410.

2

CIE-495 Independent Study and/or Research in Civil Engineering

Students will engage in a research project or an independent study in conjunction with a faculty member. Designed for engineering majors with a civil engineering concentration who either plan on graduate level work or has a special interest in certain area of civil engineering. This course has a cap of 2 credit hours and cannot be repeated except in case of a 1+1 arrangement (1 credit hour in one semester and another credit hour in another semester). Prerequisite: Sophomore standing and permission of the instructor.
