Residential Campus Housing Policy

I. Scope

This policy applies to all users of Indiana Wesleyan University (“IWU”) campus housing, including all students, faculty and staff.

II. Policy Statement

IWU exercises wise stewardship over all aspects of its facilities and grounds, including all housing facilities. Such stewardship includes use by student, faculty and staff. Based on these considerations, IWU shall allow use of its campus housing by students, faculty and staff for purposes that are not inconsistent with the educational and religious purposes held by IWU.

III. Reason for the Policy

IWU is a Christ-centered academic community whose mission is to develop students in character, scholarship, and leadership.

IWU owns, leases, and controls a residential campus in Marion, Indiana and provides short and long-term housing to its students, faculty, and staff. IWU uses these housing facilities to enhance the collegiate experience in ways that are consistent with its educational and religious purposes. This policy is needed to articulate the ways in which students, faculty and staff of IWU may use IWU’s housing facilities.

IV. Related Information

  1. Decision-Making Authority: The IWU Board of Trustees shall make decisions as needed regarding the use of the residential campus housing, all of which will be in the best interests of IWU. Such decision-making authority has been delegated to persons appointed by and responsible to the Board, subject to the following Doctrinal Restrictions.
  2. Doctrinal Restrictions: IWU’s residential campus housing may be used only for purposes and in ways not inconsistent with the doctrinal beliefs as reflected in The Bible, The Wesleyan Church Articles of Religion, and the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement. The IWU Board of Trustees shall be the final decision-maker regarding whether any use is contrary to its religious doctrine.
  3. Fees: IWU may request donations or charge fees in order to defray the estimated cost for the use of the residential campus housing. No such fees shall be charged with any impermissible view to profit.
  4. Agreements: The administration of IWU shall be responsible for memorializing guest use of the residential campus housing. Such written agreements shall prohibit the student, faculty, or staff from using the residential campus housing in a manner not consistent with the Doctrinal Restrictions identified above.
  5. Insurance: Insurance coverage shall be maintained for all uses of IWU’s residential campus housing, including certificates of coverage from guests as appropriate.
  6. Communication: The administration of IWU shall be responsible for communicating these requirements and other guidelines to all students, faculty, and staff who occupy residential campus housing facilities.
